The CASwell CAR-6031 is a 2U rackmount appliance based on one third generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processor (Ice Lake) and a highly configurable network architecture. It uses CASwell’s own designed network configuration with one or two PCI Express connected, proprietary (NIN) modules that each provides a maximum of eight high-speed Ethernet ports for up to 16 network connections with 100 Gigabit/s depending on chosen model. There’s also one PCIe expansion slot for a standard network card and additional front-accessible Ethernet ports plus two internal PCIe expansion slots for more adapter cards for networking, GPU or FPGA functionality. The system provides three front-loading 3.5-inch hard drive bays for extended storage.
The CAR-6031 is primarily targeted for unified threat management (UTM) but is also highly capable to support large-size data centers, communication or cloud service providers and enterprises with high internal networking workloads.
The 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable Processor of the CASwell CAR-6031 rackmount appliance is optimized for cloud, enterprise, AI, HPC, network security and IOT workloads and available at a wide range of frequency and power levels. These processors deliver 1.5x more performance on a range of broadly-deployed network and 5G workloads over the prior generation. Specifically the N SKU processor models are designed to support diverse network environments and are optimized for many workloads and performance levels such as L3 forwarding, 5G UPF, OVS DPDK, VPP FIB router, web server/NGINX, vEPC, vBNG, and vCMTS. They offer higher performance on NFV and networking workloads at lower thermal design power. Built-In AI and crypto acceleration, enhanced security and increased memory options are additional reasons for using Intel’s latest generation of processors.
Versatile and multi-functional
The 3rd Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processor of the CASwell CAR-6031 can be combined with 8 DIMMs of DDR4-3200 for up to 256GB of ECC main memory. The three front-loading hard drive trays can house 3.5″ HDDs or 2.5″ HDDs or SSDs with widely available SATA connectivity. In addition to the two front-loading, PCIe-connected NiN network modules the CAR-6031 offers one PCIe expansion slot for a full-length, full-height network intercace card (NIC) that offers one or more front-accessible Ethernet ports. Two more PCI Express slots are usable for internal full-height, half-length expansion cards. These can be NICs or FPGA or GPU acceleration PCIe cards to support emerging machine learning and deep learning workloads with the highest bandwidth and lowest latency – or just to accelerate specific computing performance.
Conclusion
The CASwell CAR-6031 is optimized for high balance of networking and storage requirements while providing the performance of Intels 3rd Gen. Xeon Scalable Processors and adding the versatility of multiple standard PCI Express expansion cards that can be used for a wide variety of purposes.
