2023/09/05 – CASwell, a leading manufacturer of innovative and high-performance SD-WAN (uCPE/vCPE) and network security systems, presents the next-generation CAR-4080 network edge appliance using AMD’s latest Ryzen 7000 processors with up to 12 cores and offers 32 or more Ethernet ports. The combination of AMD’s extremely power-efficient and accelerated CPU with CASwell’s sophisticated and flexible network modules results in a system, that is cost-effective and powerful at the same time. Used either as network manager or protector, the CAR-4080 can transform your business and lift both production and security to the next level.
Ryzen-powered UTM, NGFW, IDS, and BNG
The CAR-4080 is at its best when used for Unified Threat Management (UTM), but also excels in applications like Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) to cater organizations that wish to customize their security policies and prefer manual reporting and management. The NGFW can be enhanced by Intrusion Detection System (IDS) to monitor company networks for possible dangerous activity and application intelligence for even more sophisticated security algorithms.
On the network edge, the CAR-4080 can be deployed as an Edge Gateway for fast data analysis and providing ultra-low latency and high performance. For mobile networks, the system can be configured as 5G Broadband Network Gateway (BNG) to efficiently establish and aggregate user sessions while also offering value-added services, reducing churn and driving new revenue.
High-performance by a power-efficient platform
CASwell’s CAR-4080 utilizes the latest generation of AMD’s Ryzen 7000 processors with six to 12 cores based on the new and improved “Zen 4” microarchitecture, which offers a number of new features and improvements, including better performance, power efficiency and security than the predecessors. That includes enhanced memory isolation to improve protection in virtualization environments. The most obvious advantage of this platform is the support of DDR5, the latest generation of memory, that offers faster speeds and lower latency than DDR4. The CAR-4080 features four DIMM slots for up to 128 GB of DDR5-4800 main memory with ECC.
Four of CASwell’s NIN network modules can provide up to 32 Ethernet ports with up to 100-GbE data transfer, while one internal PCI Express Gen.4 x8 slot can be used for an additional network adapter and more Ethernet connections. Alternatively, the expansion slot can host an FPGA or AI accelerator card, which can speed up specific processing tasks or networking performance. For internal storage, the CAR-4080 offers one M.2 slot and two SATA 3.0 connectors for hard drives and solid-state drives.
Two redundant power supply units with 300 watts secure uninterrupted operation even if one should fail. The optionally available discrete AST2600 board for the CAR-4080 supports LOM (Lights Out Management) for device maintenance by system administrators to monitor and manage the system by remote access, regardless of whether the machine is powered on or functional.
Summary and availability
The CASwell CAR-4080 is a powerful and cost-efficient network appliance in a low-profile form factor for cybersecurity and networking solutions, especially at the network edge but also in data centers. Its new and improved Ryzen 7000 processor and latest-generation DDR5 memory offer great performance for every purpose, and the system can be further enhanced with specific AI or other accelerator cards by an internal expansion slot.
The CAR-4080 can be configured according to customer demand or requirement, and samples for customer evaluation will be available in the third quarter of 2023.
