The CASwell CAR-5061 rackmount appliance is based on the CAR-5060, CASwell’s first system with two third generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors (Ice Lake), but offers more front-loading hard drive bays and additional PCI Express expansion options. This highly configurable network appliance provides two PCIe-connected, proprietary (NIN) network modules that each provides a maximum of eight high-speed Ethernet ports with up to 100 Gigabit/s. Combined with three PCIe network adapter cards, the number of front-accessible network connections can reach 22 Ethernet ports overall.
The CAR-5061 is primarily targeted for unified threat management (UTM) but is also highly capable to support large-size data centers, communication or cloud service providers and enterprises with high internal networking workloads.
The two 3rd Gen. Intel Xeon Scalable Processors of the CASwell CAR-5061 rackmount appliance are optimized for cloud, enterprise, AI, HPC, network security and IOT workloads and offer a wide range of frequency and power levels. These processors deliver 1.5x more performance on a range of broadly-deployed network and 5G workloads over the prior generation. They deliver higher performance on NFV and networking workloads at lower thermal design power. Built-In AI and crypto acceleration, enhanced security and increased memory options are additional reasons for using Intel’s latest generation of processors.
Versatile and multi-functional
Each 3rd Gen. Intel Xeon Scalable processor of the CASwell CAR-5061 can be combined with 6 DIMMs of DDR4-3200 with ECC for up to 384GB of system memory. Three front-loading hard drive trays can house 3.5″ HDDs or 2.5″ HDDs or SSDs with widely available SATA connectivity. In addition to the two front-loading, PCIe-connected NiN network modules the CAR-5061 offers three PCIe expansion slots for full-lengh, full-height network intercace card (NIC) with one or more front-accessible Ethernet ports each for additional network connectivity. Alternatively, the CAR-5061 can by equipped with FPGA or GPU accelerator PCIe cards instead to support emerging machine learning and deep learning workloads with the highest bandwidth and lowest latency – or just to accelerate specific computing performance.
Conclusion
When more storage and PCI Express expandibility is required, the dual-processor CAR-5061 is the preferred choice over the previous, multi-networking CAR-5060, as it can provide a good balance of networking and storage while delivering high performance for communication service providers, cloud service providers and enterprises with high internal networking workloads. Network and security appliance companies can use the CAR-5061 as an upgraded next-generation unified threat management device with additional storage possibilities.
